Hi,

I'm Darby Higgs.

That's me in the logo, top left.

I started this website after a couple of years of researching, drinking, talking about, promoting and generally rabbiting on about new varietal wines.

In early 2004 I was ready for a change of pace and I needed a new hobby, or so I thought. What actually happened was that I managed to turn a lifetime interest in wine into a more focused pursuit. Two things suddenly came together, my passion for wine and for the internet suddenly seemed to be connected.

The key was I discovered a way to turn a passion into a business.

So how did it turn out for me? Over the first couple of years I managed to build my Vinodiversity site. It's all about alternative varietal wines made in Australia. I've written a book and I spend time talking to winemakers and marketer and consumers.

There is a large community of people who are interested in alternative wines. These are made from grape varieties other than the classic French grape varieties.

Most people are surprised to learn just how many wine grape varieties there are. Check out Steve Delong's varietal table via the link at the bottom of this page to see what I mean.

Getting the right food to go with your wine can make all the difference to enjoying a new wine, hence I started this site - Albarino to Zinfandel to help consumers understand these wines.

It is a cooperative effort with contributions by a number of innovative winemakers.

We hope to get even more people drinking and enjoying new varietal wines. If you are already doing that you may find new ideas to match your favourite wines with food.

The whole idea is to contribute to a more innovative wine/food culture by stimulating ideas and sharing them around.

So check out the recipes, you can seek out matches by searching via ingredient or wine syle, or just browse for some ideas.

Contact me if you have questions or suggestions, wine and food are made for sharing and the net is made for communication.

Enjoy.
